Surrey Tango Financial Policy

Surrey Tango is a private organisation and is run as a nonprofit business. That is, no party benefits through net earnings although it is only natural for people to be reimbursed for their time and expertise.
The major costs of running our events are, in descending order:

1. Hall hire
2. Visiting teachers or attendance at external workshops
3. Purchasing music
4. Snacks
5. Equipment such as decorations, lights and stereo.

As a centre it is only natural that attendees at our courses expect a high level of expertise. Continuing professional development is a requirement these days these days and we believe everyone should attend workshops so as to attain the best standard they can. Our attendance at workshops:

1. Brings new ideas to the Guildford tango community
2. Allows contact with professional teachers and dancers
3. Offers different explanations to the same problems
4. Lets you see how tango is danced differently
5. Allows all local teachers the opportunity to improve their teaching ability

Surrey Tango Teaching Philosophy

Through attendance at various courses and workshops we have met good - and bad - teachers. Our approach is firstly, to allow students to appreciate the basis of tango movement, and secondly to be aware of how the technical moves develop. In that way people can develop their own style because, of course, everyone is different. We have no interest in trying to impose our style on another.

Often an individual's style can originates from certain physical qualities. For instance, being extremely supple may encourage a dancer to pursue a style that demonstrates this characteristic. Similarly, having a highly developed 'musical ear' might allow a dancer to decorate their dance with fine footwork.

Our role is to ensure that we acknowledge the various dancing styles and abilities. that we give.

At present we are offering structured beginners and improver courses. In essence the courses are taught in 3 stages:

  • structured beginners courses that focus on technique (posture, communication and basis steps)
  • structured improvers courses that develop the movements previously learnt
  • workshops that cover the complex moves with the objective of putting it all together to get nice, flowing tango dancing

  • Ultimately we want our students to have the confidence of attending milongas and have a wonderful time.

All participants are covered by the University liability insurance.
